This time, Mason was sure he was dreaming. The sweet smell of Reese seeped into his consciousness even as his fingers twitched against silken skin. For a moment, he didn’t move, relishing the feeling of being rested, of holding Reese.

Before he woke up and reality crushed his happy space.

But the fragile feeling remained intact when Mason opened his eyes and found himself face-to-face with Reese. Fast asleep, she looked peaceful, her hair fanned across her cheek. She was still wearing the simple blouse and denim skirt from their trip to the fabric store. His hand rested low on her thigh, as if he’d gone to make love to her in his sleep and then remembered he didn’t have that right anymore.

A single bedside lamp lit the room, the night dark beyond the window. The clock on the bedside table displayed the time: 1:00 a.m. His head no longer throbbed, but had reduced to a dull ache, and the dizzy feeling was gone. He felt foggy, drugged, but more rested than he had since he’d landed at Bellington and first seen Reese looking breathtakingly beautiful in her magical gown. As untouchable as the day she’d hurled his dog tags at him and told him to get out.

Because, despite having said I Do, a small part of her had always remained beyond his grasp. Aloof. All that class and privilege creating a barrier he hadn’t really felt he’d ever breached.

But last night she’d finally broken the princess image. Despite the searing pain in his head, the gut-wrenching nausea, he’d been acutely aware that she’d stayed, cleaning up the mess he’d made when he got sick. The Reese he remembered hadn’t quite known how to navigate a middle-class world. For the short duration of their marriage, her parents had paid for a maid service.

But this Reese was more...down to earth.

He spent a long minute enjoying the creamy skin of her face, the lush lashes that currently hid the bluest eyes he’d ever seen. Careful not to wake her, he swept the hair from her cheek. Although he hated someone witnessing him in the throes of one of his migraines, he was glad it had been Reese.

And then she opened her eyes, the shocking sky-colored gaze so close his mind went blank for a moment. She didn’t look surprised to see him near enough to touch. She simply folded a hand beneath her cheek.

“What were you dreaming about in the truck today?” she said.

Surprised by the question, he answered without hesitation. “You.”

Her lids stretched wide, and he decided he needed to clarify. No sense in revealing he had sex dreams about his ex. The truth wouldn’t help.

“About our first meeting in that diner in Brooklyn,” he went on.

Her smile was instantaneous. “When you proceeded to try and match me with a dessert.”

“The very one.”

The tiny grin was impossible to restrain. He’d been so green back then. Young. Reckless. Falling at first sight. A stupid concept, that, but he still remembered looking into her gorgeous
